Autumn 2020 - My mother had Spanish influenza as a baby. More than 50 years later she developed Parkinson’s disease and died young (a phenonmenon discussed by Oliver Sachs in “Awakenings”). For this video, I have interspersed my mother’s photographs – taken before I was born – with my own photographs and video – all showing a shared love of the sea – to form a communication over time, in another era of social distancing. I added sound from files found on Freesound to each of the photos, each generating a different type of “water sound”. Overlaying all of the images is the contemporary sound from a boat ride I filmed on the Oslo Fjord.

mom and me and the sea was a commission from www.artwalkporty.co.uk as part of All at Sea - ten outdoor socially-distanced artists projects. It was shown as part of a one night screening, projected onto a building in Portobello in Edinburgh.
